Legal Counsel – Reineke Schiphorst

She studied law in Amsterdam and is a born and bred Amsterdammer. However, Reineke Schiphorst opted for a new job in Rotterdam, at Salacia Solutions. She started there as Interim Legal Counsel on March 1, 2025, and on June 1, 2025, the word “Interim” was dropped and she has been a permanent member of the Salacia team ever since.

Reineke’s career leading up to Salacia: standing up for the most copied bike

After working in contract, corporate and intellectual property law at a large Amsterdam law firm for 14 years, Reineke found herself driven by a desire to be part of a scale-up and to contribute to the scaling of an innovative product. She found exactly this at the well-known bicycle brand VanMoof, known for its innovative and sustainable electric bikes.  The quirky brand with its unique design was quickly copied. “VanMoof asked me to set up an internal legal department to add to the company’s quick growth. It was extra fun to put those copycats in their place,“ she says with a laugh.

A short break and then full speed ahead to Rotterdam

After VanMoof, Reineke took some time to think about what her next step would be. She explains: “It was nice to spend more time at home. It gave me the peace of mind to think thoroughly about what I wanted and to make a list of wishes and requirements for a new job. I found the vacancy for Interim Legal Counsel very interesting. After learning more about Salacia, I concluded that this company is a great fit for what I want.”

Contributing to a sustainable future and making a difference in her field of work holds the real value for Reineke. “I do want to mean something for the planet and nature. Because I think that’s important. In my opinion, there is still too little attention paid to sustainability worldwide.” She believes that our relationship with nature and the planet needs to change and is committed to making a positive impact. This is reflected in every decision she makes, from the clothes she wears to the food she eats and the way she travels. “Within Salacia, you feel it’s not just about the rational solution. It’s also the people who work here; you just feel that everyone is on this mission together. I really like the combination of the rational and a shared feeling”

Other than sustainable mindset, the Rotterdam mentality turned out to be a great match for Reineke. “Salacia has a down-to-earth, goal-oriented approach. Nice and grounded, and a welcome change of scenery. I may be a true Amsterdammer, but the Rotterdam mentality also appeals to me enormously.”

Reineke’s first assignment was a notable one: providing legal support to Lenny and Kees with the lease for the new office. “It’s a lot of fun to be involved in such tangible steps of growth for a company that’s expanding.”

Why a Legal Counsel?

When asked why Salacia Solutions needs a Legal Counsel, Reineke replies: “It’s helpful to have someone within the organization who brings a legal background. Naturally, there are all sorts of contracts to review, but a Legal Counsel can also offer a surprising counterpoint in many discussions. I analyze and flag unidentified issues, which leads to valuable insights and allows for flexibility within the organization.“ Reineke adds: ”I contribute ideas in my own language and in a broader context than just the legal field.”

Now that Reineke has fully integrated in Salacia, she uses her connections with colleagues to spot opportunities and contribute wherever she can. Reineke: “What makes Salacia so special is its supportive and engaging environment. I really enjoy working with such dedicated people.”

Reineke’s rational and analytical mindset, combined with a deep-seated desire to make a difference, makes her a valuable asset to our team. To us, her story is a reminder that following your passion and staying true to your values can lead to a fulfilling and impactful career.
