When you speak with Christian Penning, one thing becomes immediately clear: he is driven by the ambition to make sustainability progress both practical and human. It is a theme that runs through his career, his personal values and the energy he brings to Salacia.
Christian joined us after several years spent building communities around sustainability and innovation at MVO Nederland, now FutureUp. That experience shaped the way he works today. In his own words, “I like creating structure, bringing people together and turning impact into something tangible.” This focus on clarity and connection is exactly what makes him such a natural fit for setting up our ESG data community.
Christian chose Salacia because he saw an opportunity to continue the mission he cares about most: accelerating the transition to a future-fit economy. Rather than stepping into a predefined role, he co-designed his position with the team, ensuring it aligned with the network he had built and the change he wanted that network to enable.
He described his motivation simply: “I wanted to keep contributing to the transition to the new economy.” It is a mission first mindset that still guides his work every day.
Christian’s passion for sustainability has deep roots. It is driven by a sense of fairness and a belief that progress is a collective responsibility. As he explained with refreshing honesty, “I simply hope for a better world.” That idealism is paired with a strong sense of realism. He makes sustainability approachable in his personal life, choosing steady improvement over perfection. By keeping things simple and relatable, he lowers the barriers for others to engage as well. It is this combination that makes him so effective at inspiring both colleagues and partners.
Christian often supports organisations that are taking their first steps in ESG. His advice is deliberately simple to remove the fear of failure. As he puts it, “Just start.” Because in this field, momentum matters more than perfection.
