As a Front-End Developer, Joshua worked at a company aspiring to become a B-Corp. This required calculating their carbon impact, a feat perfectly suited to this number-cruncher. “I managed to make a good carbon calculation, but immediately after finishing, I thought: ‘This has to be done better and easier. This has to be solved with good, dedicated software,'” he says. “I got a taste for it, and a new ambition emerged: to use my talents at a company that can build and market this application. A company that gives back to society.”
Sustainability is a common thread throughout his life.
While searching for ways to realize his ambition, Joshua came into contact with Salacia Solutions. “That was a godsend, because I quickly realized they’d already built the software I wanted to work on. Once I delved deeper into the company, I also discovered that this club is fully committed to a better world for tomorrow. I immediately recognized myself in that, as sustainability is a common thread throughout my life,” he explains. Joshua appears to live a very conscious life; he doesn’t own a car, but uses his bicycle and public transport and follows a vegan lifestyle.
The software developed by Salacia Solutions is truly impressive. I say that with two hats: that of a programmer and that of a ‘world improver’. I applied for a vacancy at Salacia and received a very warm welcome. What a fantastic team awaited me in Rotterdam. Driven people from all over the world, all incredibly motivated to contribute to a better world. I immediately felt at home. No two workdays are the same
Joshua enjoys his work as a Full Stack Developer; no two days are the same. “I’ve been given carte blanche to explore where things can be improved, accelerated, and made more efficient. So, right now, I’m working on the front end of the software. Tomorrow, I might be called upon again as a back end developer. In that role, I act as a bridge between the user-visible interface and the ‘engine’ that drives everything.” A plus for Joshua is that he’s been given the confidence to do his work in an open and free manner. “That also means you can contribute valuable ideas, because together we know more,” he says with satisfaction.
From small impact to big impact
Did Joshua expect to find a job that aligns so well with his aspirations? “I didn’t expect it, but I certainly hoped for it. The image I’ve developed of my ideal job and work environment has evolved along with how I’ve positioned myself in society. At Salacia, I discovered my ‘kindred spirits.’ What I love is that from making a small impact with my conscious lifestyle, I now have the opportunity to contribute to creating a big impact. That feels good and motivates me enormously to continue growing in this journey.”
