UX designer – Min Chan

It is well known that the Salacia Solutions team consists of a dedicated crew who have come to the Netherlands from all corners of the globe. Min Chan, Salacia’s new UX designer, also comes from far away. Born in Taiwan, she studied Industrial Design at NCKU University in Taiwan. A scholarship from SPOSAD (Scholarship Program for Overseas Study in Arts and Design) brought her to the Netherlands in 2019.

In 2021, she completed her Master’s degree in Industrial Design Engineering (IDE) in Delft. Her studies had a strong focus on design and interaction. “This is closely related to Front End Development,” Min explains. “However, good user research is the foundation of optimising the ‘User Experience’ (UX) of our software. For the best User Experience, you need an optimised User Interface (UI). I research the user experience of Salacia’s software and use the results to design new User Interfaces that are fully optimised. A good User Interface removes barriers.”

At Salacia, she found the challenge she was looking for

Min: “So I focus on user experience and optimise it. That mainly involves doing a lot of research by talking to software users. Based on their answers, I come up with design proposals, and once they’ve been approved, I build an optimised User Interface as part of Front End Development.”

During her studies in Delft, Min did an internship in Zoetermeer, and the company collaborated with her on her thesis. “I worked there for a year, then I started working as a UX designer at an IT company. I did that for three years. However, I was looking for a new challenge. A friend introduced me to Eelco from Salacia. After two interviews, we were in agreement. I was already living in Rotterdam, so it was nice to be close by.”  Min Chan is Salacia’s first dedicated UX designer.

Now making a difference in sustainability in business too

“I had already been ‘sustainable’ in my private life for quite some time. I have always had an eye for improvement in the area of sustainability and pay a lot of attention to it. For example, I am a member of ‘Clothing Loop’, a concept that sends you used clothing based on your taste and clothing size. That’s fine with me, because I’m not a typical ‘fashionista’ who wants to follow the latest trends. We are also fans of Toogood2go, by the way.“ Min developed an ambition to contribute to a better world in her work as well. ”That has always been a wish of mine,“ she explains. ”Doing work that I enjoy and that contributes to a better world was really a goal. With my work at Salacia, I can create a positive impact. An optimised user interface removes barriers. This results in satisfied users and ensures that companies enjoy working with us. I said ‘yes’ to Salacia without hesitation.”

A flying start

At the moment, Min spends a lot of time in meetings and is doing everything she can to acquire the knowledge she needs to create the perfect UI. “75% of my work already consists of tackling design tasks. We put everything on the table and discuss what needs to be done. Then I make proposals, work on prototype interfaces, and evaluate the design to see if it fits the users’ needs. We are currently focusing on the most urgent issues.”

In the future, Min wants to develop a “Solid Design Base.” “We can build on this and make continuous improvements. This should lead to the most mature design imaginable. I also enjoy helping with innovation,” she concludes.
