Rederij Groen is a maritime service provider operating out of Scheveningen, in The Netherlands. Their specialised fleet of 20 owned seagoing vessels supports offshore operations such as surveillance and seismic support.
As the company looked ahead to its sustainability journey, they sought a solid starting point: clarity on what matters most, and where they could make the biggest impact. Though regulatory shifts under the European Commission’s Omnibus package exempted Rederij Groen from CSRD reporting obligations, the leadership made the deliberate decision to move forward anyway. Why? Because they recognised that sustainability isn’t just about compliance.
With support from our partner 2Impact, and powered by Salacia’s ESG data platform, Rederij Groen carried out both a Double Materiality Assessment (DMA) and a Greenhouse Gas (GHG) baseline assessment.
Mapping what matters
2Impact applied their tried-and-tested four-step methodology to conduct the DMA:
- Mapping the context: 2Impact reviewed Rederij Groen’s business model, stakeholders, organisational structure, value chain, and sector trends.
- ESG topic identification: A long list of relevant ESG topics was created, then reviewed with internal stakeholders to identify key impacts, risks, and opportunities.
- Materiality scoring: Internal experts assessed and prioritised these topics using standardised criteria.
- Executive validation: Senior management reviewed and approved the results, ensuring alignment with the company’s strategic goals.
This approach resulted in the key sustainability topics for Rederij Groen. They uncovered seven material ESG topics, with 20 material impacts and 10 associated risks and opportunities. Rederij Groen now has a clear focus on the ESG topics that matter most to them. With the DMA as a solid foundation, the next step is to develop a full ESG strategy and sustainability report from the data that is now easily accessible in Salacia’s ESG Data Hub.
2Impact then carried out a full GHG baseline assessment in line with the GHG Protocol, to calculate Rederij Groen’s climate emissions. Together with Rederij Groen, they defined organisational boundaries and mapped emissions across all relevant scopes. This data was also collected, structured, and analysed using the Salacia ESG data hub. This provided a comprehensive and clear overview of their emissions footprint, from direct operations to upstream and downstream partners. With these insights, Rederij Groen is now equipped to take targeted action to reduce emissions in the identified hotspots and engage with partners in the value chain that have a significant influence on emission reduction.
Outcomes That Drive Action
The outcome of this project gave Rederij Groen a clear, data-driven foundation for their ESG strategy, built on what truly matters. With full visibility into emissions across their value chain, they can now take targeted action and engage meaningfully with key stakeholders. The assessment also delivered a strong starting point for their first sustainability report, helping the company communicate transparently and confidently with external audiences. Above all, Rederij Groen now has an ESG strategy grounded in solid data. Ready for reporting and ready to drive real impact.
“As Rederij Groen, we are very pleased with the expertise, knowledge and dedication of 2Impact and Salacia. Their specialised understanding of ESG, the DMA process, and the relevant regulations really took the pressure off our team. Mapping our GHG emissions is not something we are used to doing ourselves and the Salacia ESG software proved to be a good tool in this regard. Thanks to the support and sparring with 2Impact’s enthusiastic team, we were able to focus more clearly on executing our business strategy, in which ESG will play a central role.”
